Description
An account of the resource
The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition. IMAGES ARE NOT FOR SALE – Please, do not remove the watermark or strip the metadata, thank you. Greenlees Shop - MOT00324

Description
An account of the resource
Greenlees Saddlers 1912 - Thomas William Greenlees, standing on the left, with his assistant Mr Taylor, took over the family business at 13 Church Street when his uncle, Anthony Greenlees, died in 1910. His work making and repairing harnesses and other leather goods, together with running the shop, left him little time apart from weekends to indulge his favourite occupation - photography. He was a founder-member, in 1906, of the Todmorden Photographic Society. His sisters, Sarah and Alice, kept the Corner Café, a few doors away on Church Street, while his brother Sam Greenlees ran a smithy on Der Street. When Thomas died in 1946, his daughter Haidee carried on the business until her retirement in 1980. She was the last of five generations of Greenlees saddlers at Church Street.
