Hebden Bridge Local History Society
Description
An account of the resource
The Hebden Bridge Local History Society was formed in 1949 and is a section of the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society which celebrated its hundredth anniversary in 2005.
The Society organises a winter programme from September to March on Wednesdays at the Methodist Church in Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm.
The Society's archive and library is housed at The Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge. The collection is available for members to use on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month.

A catalogue of the Society's is available on their website..
One of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe, architects.
Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.

The topic of the resource
Architecture, Buildings, Clay House, Drawing, Halifax Courier Ltd., Sketch, Soyland
Description
An account of the resource
The sketch and description were originally published in The Halifax Courier in 1912-1913.
A long, straggling and many-gabled block of buildings, crumbling rapidly to decay. The sketch represents the courtyard in the centre of the ancient pile. Over the entrance of the double decker porch is the inscription ‘SC, 1662’, the C according to some being the initial for Crossley, while others hold that it stands for Clay. The inner door is of oak, heavily studded with iron and this has one of the old types of oak bars – a block about four inches thick which was inserted into the wall to hold the door fast. Owing to its dilapidated condition only a portion of the premises is now occupied, the central part which is the farmhouse and a cottage adjoining. PH/28

Historic images of Calderdale from the 1950s to 1980s
Description
An account of the resource
Images of Calderdale in B&W taken ca. 1950 - ca. 1980
Donald Taylor was born in Hebden Bridge, later moving to Heptonstall where he lived with his wife, Ellen, at No. 42 Northgate for 53 years. He loved the countryside and was a keen walker and always took with him his favourite Pentax camera, which he won in a photography competition. He worked as a cutter and tailor for many years at Astins in Hebden Bridge. During the Second World War he spent four years in a tank regiment, where he trained as a wireless operator and was involved in the campaign in Africa and then Italy including action in Monte Cassino. Donald's photos are well-known and several were used to illustrate 'South Pennine Park', a book by his neighbour, historian Herbert Collins. Donald died in 2007 at the age of 85.
