Hebden Bridge Local History Society
Description
An account of the resource
The Hebden Bridge Local History Society was formed in 1949 and is a section of the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society which celebrated its hundredth anniversary in 2005.
The Society organises a winter programme from September to March on Wednesdays at the Methodist Church in Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm.
The Society's archive and library is housed at The Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge. The collection is available for members to use on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month.
Donations to the archive are welcomed. Contributions of photos and documents, even from the recent past.
A catalogue of the Society's is available on their website..
One of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe, architects.
Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.

An account of the resource
Images of Calderdale in B&W taken ca. 1950 - ca. 1980
Donald Taylor was born in Hebden Bridge, later moving to Heptonstall where he lived with his wife, Ellen, at No. 42 Northgate for 53 years. He loved the countryside and was a keen walker and always took with him his favourite Pentax camera, which he won in a photography competition. He worked as a cutter and tailor for many years at Astins in Hebden Bridge. During the Second World War he spent four years in a tank regiment, where he trained as a wireless operator and was involved in the campaign in Africa and then Italy including action in Monte Cassino. Donald's photos are well-known and several were used to illustrate 'South Pennine Park', a book by his neighbour, historian Herbert Collins. Donald died in 2007 at the age of 85.

Description
An account of the resource
Mount Cross, Stiperden, on the Long Causeway where the old tracks converge on the moor between Heptonstall and Burnley, near the branch road to Todmorden and Rochdale. Possibly Anglo Saxon and one of the earliest signs of Christianity in the valleys.
This superb medieval cross possibly marks the boundary between the ancient parish of Dewsbury and the monastic lands of Whalley Abbey. Set in a field below the Long Causeway, an ancient ridgeway of possibly prehistoric origin, it is strategically placed at a junction of packhorse routes to Burnley, Halifax, Rochdale and Cross Stone. It stands five feet high and has a slender shaft with a cross head of the equal-armed type with central boss. It was repaired in 1898 with copper dowels after being thrown down and broken. To the west are several other cross sites thought to be guide stones for travellers raised by the monks who may have preached here. Along the Long Causeway would have come packhorses laden with wool from the Lancashire granges of Whalley Abbey en route to Halifax and beyond.

Description
An account of the resource
Near the top end of the Colden Valley on a packhorse route to Hurstwood and Colne this medieval wayside cross stands in magnificent moorland above the Gorple reservoirs. In the drought of 1976 the receding water revealed an ancient paved trackway, part of the original medieval causeway which can still be followed up to the broken cross which was repaired in 2002 by local residents.
