Description
An account of the resource
The Making of Todmorden’ was an exhibition staged in June 1993 at Todmorden Town Hall. Initiated by Jack Taylor MBE and Todmorden Information Centre Trust it used material researched and compiled by Jack Taylor, Betty Savage, Derek Proctor, Dennis O'Neill and members of the Todmorden Antiquarian Society. We are also indebted to the Fielden family and Roger Birch, who provided many of the images. Roger also did much of the work in putting the exhibition together. Opened by Nobel prizewinner Sir Geoffrey Wilkinson, the exhibition received great acclaim. It tells the story of Todmorden’s rich industrial heritage and its people and the success of the exhibition was in no small part due to the detailed research undertaken. It is a fine body of work and is presented here as a tribute to all those who contributed to the exhibition.
The door at the top of the steps was the entrance to the "takkin' in shop" of John Fielden, who lived there from 1703 to his death in 1734. This portion was probably added by the same John Fielden for the purpose of his business as a clothier, or cloth maker. He gave out weft and warp to the handloom weavers and 'took in' the finished pieces. He was uncle to Joshua Fielden of Edge End, who founded the firm of Fielden Bros. at Laneside.

Description
An account of the resource
Three hundred years ago, most of the population would be found in the farms and cottages on the upland "shelf", in areas such as Shore, Mankinholes and Bottomley. Families were self-sufficient, growing and producing most of their own food and clothing.
Gradually, the merchant clothiers, the entrepreneurs of the 17th - 18th century emerged. The domestic system with its "putting-out" system became the norm. Hand loom weavers working at home would take their woven pieces to the clothier at the "takkin' in shop". In return he would furnish them with more wool to be taken home and spun and woven. The clothier would visit the cloth or piece hall to sell the woven pieces and to buy wool. A view of Ratcher and Haugh Stones, above Holebottom.
The three-storey Ratcher cottage on the right is a typical example of the building constructed specifically for a cottage industry. It was later used as a bobbin factory for Lawrence Wilson from 1823.

In the 1980s much of the industrial heritage of the South Pennine area was being changed or in some cases lost. Pennine Heritage commissioned a survey of the condition of mills in the area. Photographs were taken when the survey was carried out, and the survey results have been added to those images in this collection.

Description
An account of the resource
LLOCATION: Bridge Street, Slaithwaite
REF: CV24
GRID REF: 082 141
CLASSIFICATION: D
CONDITION: Mostly used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Late 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Two large, late 19C spinning mills on either side of Bridge Street. The main building (north side) is a large four storey mill with centrally placed tower. Part of the northerly facing frontage is projected out and features decorative arched windows. Also large octagonal stone chimney (now with brick cap) remains. It was built in 1887 by the Globe Worsted Company and the second mill across the road was built a couple of years later - a slightly smaller, five storey stone building with a small tower at one corner.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mills are still used for worsted spinning, although the 1889 building looks only semi used. They are both impressive structures, but may become vulnerable if they fall into disuse.

Description
An account of the resource
The Hebden Bridge Local History Society was formed in 1949 and is a section of the Hebden Bridge Literary & Scientific Society which celebrated its hundredth anniversary in 2005.
The Society organises a winter programme from September to March on Wednesdays at the Methodist Church in Hebden Bridge at 7:30 pm.
The Society's archive and library is housed at The Birchcliffe Centre, Hebden Bridge. The collection is available for members to use on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month.
Donations to the archive are welcomed. Contributions of photos and documents, even from the recent past.
A catalogue of the Society's is available on their website..
One of the many projects the Society is currently working on is the Gibson and Sutcliffe papers. The materials had been lying in a room at Croft House in Hebden Bridge, undisturbed for over 50 years. One collection belonged to Abraham Gibson of Greenwood Lee and the other to Sutcliffe & Sutcliffe, architects.
Members of the Society are also transcribing gravestones in Heptonstall churchyard, providing easy access to local information for genealogists.

Hebden Bridge Local History Society
