Title

Lord Bros. - MOT00300

Description

The Lower George Street entrance, more recently used by Openshaw's, prior to demolition in 1989.

Lord Brothers - Employees of Lord Brothers' Canal Street Works are pictured at the entrance to their Lower George Street workshop, 1905-10. The apprentices are seated at the front. The reason for the group photograph is not known. In its day, Lord Brothers was one of the leading manufacturers of cotton spinning and preparatory machinery, supplying well-designed products at the right price. Its success was attributed to the senior partner, Edward Lord, a gifted mechanical engineer who, it was said, could improve any machine he touched. After his death the firm lost much of its vigour; it was eventually bought out by Brooks and Doxey in 1920, and closed in 1930. Ref: Todmorden Album
