It has been a registered charity since 2003 to further its aims “of disseminating information about the Lancashire &amp; Yorkshire Railway using historical information to educate and inform the community at large about this part of our national heritage.” The Society holds a large collection of photographs and drawings and other information about the L&amp;YR in its archive for either historical research or railway modelling. Sowerby Bridge was the main operating centre for the Upper Calder Valley with a large engine and rolling stock depot where several locomotives were based. The area is now an industrial estate although the base of the coaling stage has been built into one industrial unit and Tesco now stands on the site of the Goods Depot. The engine shed and the yards were dismantled following closure in 1964.
