Description

NAME: GLENDALE MILL

LOCATION: New Mill

REF: HV 35

GRID REF: 163 087

CLASSIFICATION: C

CONDITION: Mostly used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid – late 19C (site earlier)

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: This was the site of the manorial corn mill, which moved here from Holmfirth in the early 14C. Fulling was also carried out and in 1780 a scribbling engine was installed – one of the earliest in the Holme Valley area. Part of the old mill apparently still survives and houses the works canteen. Also the old mill race can be clearly seen running across the fields. Site known at this time as Ing Nook Mill. Present main mill building dates from the mid 19C – four storey, stone built in the typical style of that period. Number of smaller outbuildings of similar or later date, weaving shed and modern buildings on the site. The square stone chimney is set above the mill.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill is still used for textiles manufacture, producing worsted cloth. The site is of historical interest.
