<text>The art deco concourse was built in 1938 at the same time as the adjacent Queens Hotel was rebuilt in the same style. The concourse was built to link Wellington Station, re-named City North, with New Station, re-named City South, but there remained no passenger thoroughfare between the two once through the ticket barriers. Wellington Station closed in 1966 and its site is now the station car park.

The square arches seen here on the left of the concourse around the shops and cafes originally housed the ticket barriers to Wellington Station’s platforms which were immediately behind. As a boy at school in Leeds in the 1950s David Taylor remembers regularly walking up the concourse when there were former LMS locos only a matter of metres away behind the barriers and the whole concourse was pervaded by that unmistakeable smell of steam locomotion.</text>

Derek attended Old Town School then Calder High School, after which he did an engineering apprenticeship at John Pickles and Son, Mytholm. Later he worked at Broadbent Machine Tools, Mytholmroyd, installing and servicing their equipment all over the world. This photographic project, supported financially by Hebden Royd Town Council, provides us with an invaluable record, looking as it does at the changing face of Hebden Bridge and the surrounding district, over the last fifty years or so.

Until March 2014 this collection of photographic prints was housed in the Hebden Bridge Library.

We are indebted to the members of the Hebden Bridge Camera Club for all their efforts in the past, now, and in the future.

<text>The Camera Club was formed in the summer of 1952 from a special interest section of the Hebden Bridge Literary and Scientific Society. Initially the new club was called the Calder Camera Club but following a certain amount of confusion regarding its location, after a couple of years, the name was changed to Hebden Bridge Camera Club. Originally the Club met over Horner’s Barber’s shop on Market Street and subsequently in a room over the Council Offices. We now meet at the Masonic Hall, Hangingroyd Lane, Hebden Bridge.

The Club is a member of the Yorkshire Photographic Union (YPU) and through this is affiliated to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. This allows us to participate in competitions, exhibitions and various seminars, both at County and National levels. In this context the Club hosted the YPU’s annual “Assembly and Exhibition” in 1973 and again in 1982.

From September to April the Club meets weekly, the principal activities being a bi-monthly print and projected images competition and lectures on photography-related subjects. We also take part in occasional inter-club competitions. During the summer we meet once per fortnight and these meetings usually takes the form of a walk around places of local interest. The Club also holds an annual print exhibition which is gaining in popularity each year.

With the advent of digital imaging and the ease with which high quality prints can now be produced, there has been a resurgence in amateur photography and this has been reflected the growing interest in the Club’s activities and in new membership. However, we are still a relatively small club and new members are always welcome. So if you’re a novice wishing to improve your technique, or an experienced photographer prepared to test your ability in competition, why not come along and sample a few meetings – expect a friendly welcome.</text>

<text>Alice Longstaff (née Speak) (d. 1992 aged 85) was a remarkable lady. Born at Little Lear Ings farm in Heptonstall on May 16 1907, she started work at 14 years old, in September 1921, as apprentice photographer at the Westerman Studio, 25 West End, Hebden Bridge. Crossley Westerman had established the studio in 1890; on his death in 1918 his daughter Ada took over the business, and it was Ada who trained the young apprentice. Alice remained there for the next 70 years. In 1935 she and her family bought the business, and her brother Clement became the framer and darkroom technician, until he died in 1963. In 1935 Alice married John Longstaff who joined the business as picture framer when Clement died, and they continued to work together until her death in 1992.

0ne of the most frequently-asked questions about the Longstaff Collection is why was it named after Alice, when so many of the photographs in the archive are credited to her predecessor Crossley Westerman?

Alice's Album - The Story of a Hebden Bridge Photographer's Studio, has the answer and much more! Copies are still available from local bookshops and online from Hebweb. This 68-page high quality soft-back lavishly illustrated with photographs in colour, sepia and black and white, it tells the story not only of Alice but of Crossley Westerman and his daughter, Ada, too, without whom there would be no collection.

Founder of the studio in the early 1890s, Crossley Westerman could have had little inkling of the amazing retailing tradition he had set in motion, ending only with the death, 100 years later, of Alice Longstaff who took over in 1935.

It's amazing enough for a business to survive for around a century but for it to be in the hands of only three proprietors makes for a fascinating story which "Alice's Album" tells from beginning to end.</text>

<text>This was the original bridge on A646 between Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd. Note the sign 'Death Trap' because of the sharp right-angled bend. The bridge was rebuilt and further rebuilt when the canal was opened up. To the left of this photograph stands Maudes Clog factory. Later it became Walkeys.

The traveller from Hebden Bridge to Mytholmroyd by road can see the original turnpike road of 1770 in the field to the left of the former Tythe Barn. The first bridge was needed when the Rochdale Canal was taken under the road about 1800. It would have been the usual type of canal bridge, eight feet wide and fairly hump-backed. It would have needed to be improved or even replaced when the road was brought to its present level in 1825.

The sharp right-angled bend as the bridge crossed the canal presented no difficulty to horse drawn traffic, but, when traffic became motorised at the beginning of the last century, the long, straight, flat approach to the bridge invited an increase in speed and then a quick braking at the bridge and this combination led to numerous accidents, some fatal, hence the Death Trap sign.

The stone bridge was replaced by a wider iron bridge and attempts were made to make the approach safer, though accidents still occurred. Later the canal was culverted in order to straighten the bend in the road.

It was in the 1980s that the restoration of the Rochdale Canal was effected here by taking it through a fifty yard metal tube under the road.</text>

<text>Situated between Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd. Demolished around due to dry rot.

See photograph Ref. 010a of Daniel Jones Crossley who moved into the newly built Fallingroyd House in 1873 with his wife and two sons.

In 1873 Daniel Jones Crossley moved into his newly built Falling Royd House along with his wife and 2 sons. The wages book for the servants lists a cook, and three other female servants described as waitress, housemaid and general domestic servant. A gardener lived at Falling Royd Lodge, and three men, housed at Falling Royd Cottages, were described as coachman/groom, agricultural labourer, farm servant. The men were paid about £2 a fortnight (£52 a year) whereas the women were paidless and monthly. The cook was paid around £20 a year.

From 1902 onwards a nurse was employed, presumably to care for Mr. Crossley because he became "afflicted with a painful disease which totally incapacitated him from following active duties". He was confined to the grounds and residence of Falling Royd unable even to go for a carriage drive. For someone who went on a tour of the world in his thirties, this must have been frustrating. His active life, not counting his business, included being a county councillor (he took a non-political stance although a staunch liberal), a magistrate, president of the choral and harmonic society and president of Hebden Bridge Ambulance Association. He helped to build Hope Baptist Church, to found Hebden Bridge and District Nursing Institution and supported the annual Old Folks Treat Movement at Hebden Bridge. He died in 1907 but his son, Arthur Riley Crossley continued to live at Falling Royd until early I 920s when he moved to Aldershot. He tried to auction the house but selling it was a problem. In 1928 Charles Robertshaw, later to be knighted, became the new owner. The farm buildings and outbuildings were no longer inhabited. He died in 1960 and Lady Alice continued to live there. The house by then had a garage and shooting range. After her death in 1964, the house was sold. It was demolished about 1970 due to the poor state of the building and a new house erected on the site.</text>

On the left of the picture, beyond the three chimneys, is High Street, New Street and Bridge Lanes all demolished in the 1960's. The three chimneys belong to L-R, Beehive Works, Breck Mill and Brunswick Mill. On the right of Brunswick Mill is Salam Mill the site of which the Co-op now owns.

The large house in the centre foreground is the Manse occupied by the minister for Salam Methodist Chapel. To the right of the Manse we can see Essex Street, York Street, Norfolk Street and Guildford Street.

Houses now occupy the land adjoining Palace House Road in the foreground.

The pathway in the foreground leads up through the wood to Old Chamber, and the track around the left side of the hill leads to Heptonstall past the redundant quarries which make up Hell Hole Rocks in Eaves Woods.
