He has one showing the construction work associated with Burdock Way/New Bank taken in the summer of 1972, in which the power station and associated cooling towers were still present. Moreover his photo shows most of the Gasworks buildings adjacent to the Charlestown Viaduct still intact. In this photo the power station has gone, and, aside from 1 gasometer, the Gasworks site has been cleared. According to the Halifax Courier, the cooling towers were not demolished until September 1974, so your photo must be subsequent to then. Originally just Armley it was the first station out of Leeds on the Bradford & Leeds Railway which opened via the Aire Valley in 1846 quickly being acquired by the MR. BR changed its name to Armley Canal Road in 1950 to distinguish it from Armley & Wortley on the former GNR/LNER line which itself was re-named Armley Moor at the same time. The station was closed in 1965. Born in Hebden Bridge he attended Stubbings School and the former Central Street Middle School. A railway worker for 44 years he was called up in 1943 and was involved with hospital trains and troop movements. He was later shipped off to Burma to help restore the shattered transport system. He was well known for his talks and slide shows to local organisations throughout Calderdale.
