Title
Grange Mill Chimney - ALC00819
Description
Grange Mill chimney was a towering landmark in Mytholmroyd until 1898 when it was demolished in spectacular style.
A newspaper report at the time stated: "Crowds gathered in Mytholmroyd in 1897 to watch the fall of a giant. As it tumbled the massive Grange Mill chimney blew out a valedictory cloud of smoke and dirt. Five years previously, on September 13, 1892, thousands of people gathered to watch one of the Calder Valley’s most destructive fires, which caused £20,000 damage at Grange Mill. Occupied by cotton spinners William Horsfall and Sons, it was the largest mill in the village. Halifax and Todmorden fire engines fought a losing battle against the blaze. They were joined by Hebden Bridge brigade."
