Description

Granny and Grandad Brown are seated outside Goose Gate, Kathleen Birch is on Grandad's knee, and stood behind is Uncle Alf. The little boy at the front with the hat on is Tom Birch; he and his brother Jack went to play one day in the hay in a Dutch barn between Goose Gate and Lower Callis. They did not realise that there was a fire in the middle of the hay which had spontaneously combusted, the boys fell into the fire and Tom was badly burnt, but his brother did not survive.
