Dewhirsts Trip to Blackpool, April 17 1947 - RCF00139
Description
Thanks to Nigel Lloyd and Hebden Bridge Times of 18th July 1997 we have this information:
Thanks to readers Mr Jack Collinge, who together with his wife, Thelma, is pictured on the photo, repeated right, and Mr Glynne Lloyd, both of Mytholmroyd, the scene has been established as Hill’s Restaurant, Blackpool, where staff had assembled either before or after the bun fight!
Dewhirst’s, based at what is now Co-op Food Fair’s warehouse, Central Street, was one of more than 30 sewing shops in Hebden Bridge, we are informed. At the time of the outing the owner was Mr Dennis Hartley and Mr Harold Crossley was the manager.
Mr Lloyd, who worked at Dewhirst’s as a cutter from 1949 to ’58, remembered that after the factory closed in 1974 many of the lady workers – including his own wife, Sylvia, who was a machinist – continued to meet on a regular basis for chats about “the good, old days!”.
Mr Collinge was a machine tackler and following his demob from the Army, worked at Dewhirst’s from 1946 until 1958.
Staff of Dewhirst’s, Hebden Bridge, on an outing to Blackpool, have been identified as follows: Alice Greenwood, Mona Ackroyd, George Henry Greenwood, George English, Harold Crossley, Jim Stuttard, Harold Greenwood, Willis Greenwood, Tony Walton, Arnold Sunderland, Jack Sutcliffe, Jack Dewhirst and Peter Greenwood.
