NAME: RIBBLEDEN MILL

LOCATION: Dunford Road, Holmfirth

REF: HU 16

CONDITION: fully used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C (site earlier)

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Situated close to the centre of Holmfirth at the foot of Ribbleden Clough, this site dates back to the first decade of the 19C. It was later rebuilt and enlarged – date stone 1868 on a three storey stone building along the road. This building has a few interesting architectural details – eg large, arched windows with ornate stone hoods. A five storey spinning mill building behind has been demolished. However, an engine house and octagonal stone chimney remain. There is a dyeworks immediately adjacent – mid-late 19C buildings with some modern additions. Dam upstream.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The dyeworks is still used and the remaining main building has been subdivided and provides premises for a home improvement and kitchen centre, and a photographer’s studio. Engine house in poor condition
