Description
NAME: ALMA WORKS
LOCATION: Alma Road, Walsden
REF: CD9
GRID REF: 933 222
CLASSIFICATION: D
CONDITION: Semi-used
APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Mid-late 19C
DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: Located on the Rochdale Canal, just above Hollins Mill, Alma Mill was built by the Todmorden Commercial Spinning and Manufacturing Company in the mid 1850’s. It was later connected with Hollins Mill. Today it is largely an ad-hoc collection of mainly one and two storey stone and brick buildings with a large number of additions and alterations. Part of the site has been demolished. Close to the site is an unusual triangular-shaped block of workers’ houses.
PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The works is subdivided between a number of concerns. Textile machinery is made here and a couple of textile firms have premises. Some of the site is a bit unsightly, but it has a pleasant frontage along the canal, which, together with nearby Hollins and Hope Mills, creates a characteristic industrial scene to be viewed from the towpath.
Information from a mill survey carried out in 1984.
