CMBC Ref 087252. The Gibbet was a means of execution used in Halifax in the 16th and 17th centuries. This non-working replica was constructed on the site of the original in 1974.
The building in the foreground has now gone but the building with Holt on it (which is on Chatham Street itself) is still in existence. The church building is St Mary's Catholic Church on Gibbet Street.

On the left hand side can be seen the entrance to the Old Arcade which goes between Russell Street and Corn Market. This is the junction with Market Street.
This scene is almost unrecognisable from the Northgate of today as many of the buildings have since been demolished. The church building on the right appears to be Northgate End Chapel, built in 1871 and demolished in 1982.
Holly Bank House? This building was at one time in the 1960's the Youth Employment Office / Career's Centre. It was later purchased by Bass Charrington brewery and turned into a pub called "The Bass House".
