Title

Lumb Mill, Luddenden Valley - HPC00357

Description

NAME: LUMB MILL

LOCATION: Quarter mille NE of Wainstalls

REF: LD 3

GRID REF: 047 289

CLASSIFICATION: B

CONDITION: Fully used

APPROX DATE OF SITE AND BUILDINGS: Early 19C

DESCRIPTION/HISTORY: A small stone built three storey building along Georgian lines, with a wheelhouse on the western end and a cottage extension at the other. The wheel house contains a 36ft diameter overshot water wheel, which remains intact. This probably replaced an earlier external wheel. The dam immediately above the mill is now mainly overgrown.

PRESENT USE AND POTENTIAL: The mill has been much altered internally and is currently used as a mechanics’ workshop. It is a fine example of an early water powered mill whose appearance has changed very little in 150 years, and should merit listing. The condition of the water wheel has deteriorated and renovation by some interested party would be desirable. The mill is privately owned
