Postcard dated 1906. The statue of John Fielden designed by J.H. Foley and cast in 1869, was moved here from its original site outside the Town Hall. In 1939 it was again moved to its current site (2019) in Centre Vale Park.
Market Street used to be main shopping street in the town. Note the architecture of the buildings above ground floor level. The mill closing off the view of the street was Barbreck Mill.
The terrace of houses at right angles to the road is East View. The field in front of this terrace is the site of the present Elphin Court. he tree short terraces along the road side are:
The opening in front of the building in the centre of the photo is the access to the bridge which crosses the river to the former Hoo Hole Dyeworks. The building on the left is Holme Villa and adjacent to Holme Terrace.

The building on the extreme left, formerly the Freemason's Arms, was known as the 'red house', and is now apartments. The next 2 buildings have since been demolished, the next is now a cafe known as No 72 Burnley Road. 1916
