This view is largely unchanged today, The building on the right was demolished and the Burton Tailor group was based there, with the Alexandra dance hall above. For many years it was known as Palin's. Pearl Palin held dance classes there and it was a…

This magnificent building was the main seat of the local council until the 'new' offices were built in the late 1970s on Northgate. The buildings on the left remain and are now the Swan Hotel. Postcard dated 1909.

This theatre is still in use today and is a popular entertainment venue. In the 1960s many of the upcoming pop bands played there and in the same decade, and the 1970s live wrestling marches were shown. At one time there were at least five or six…

This view is largely unchanged today, though obviously fashions have changed and the amount of road traffic has increased. The grand building on the left is now Lloyds Bank and is worth stepping inside to see the glorious stained glass ceiling.…

The very handsome Post Office building on Commercial Street, now disused, with the main office at present in the WH Smith shop at Woolshops. The shop on the left was for many years a very popular toyshop. Postcard dated 1019.

The view along this busy street is just the same today, nut the shops on the left side of the street are used today by Harvey's Department Store. The Clarks store was used by the Coop with many different departments for many years until the 1990s.…

Alderman Hodgson resplendent in robes and hat along with several legal looking gentlemen on a temporary platform outside the Town Hall.

Another shot of the royal couple at Shibden Hall in October 1937. Lord Harewood behind Alderman Hodgson.

The townspeople looking very serious as they massed at the Town Hall to hear the declaration of VE Day. Presumably their expressions were of joy moments later when the impact of the news had been absorbed. The street scene is little changed today…

The title of this picture explains what is happening here. What a wonderful picture of how 'The Dukes' were appreciated by the large number of townspeople, who were on rooftops (on the left) and hanging out of the windows in the building on the…

The celebrations continue in this lovely picture looking down Southgate. The Boars Head Hotel on the left no longer exists and the Rose and Crown Hotel was demolished to make way for the Marks and Spencers store, (now Wilkinsons).

Unmistakable joy in this evocative picture. Double summertime during the war meant that there was still daylight at 10pm. The electrical store of Fred Moores was in the town for very many years until the 1990s. This street is now pedestrianised.

The massed crowds on this fantastic images are here for a presentation of the Freedom of the Borough. Presumably it was presented to Pte R Burton, the Duke of Wellington (whose regiment many of the local men who joined the army will have entered) is…

The easiest feature to identify in this image is the clock tower of the Town Hall top left. The building which has Holdsworth Wool Merchants emblazoned on its front remains today as the Wool Merchant Hotel. The majority of the buildings in the…

The features identifiable in today's view of the town are North Bridge centre right and the clock tower of the Town Hall top left. The mills and factories in the foreground area have all gone, along with the chimneys and mills.

http://www.penninehorizons.org/Omeka_photos/DPC00503.jpg
Most of the buildings in the foreground of this image have been demolished, along with the cooling towers. And the huge numbers of chimneys here no longer exist, along with the mills they were used in.

http://www.penninehorizons.org/Omeka_photos/DPC00501.jpg
This view over the town is vastly different today. The number of chimneys seen here look really incongruous , but would have been entirely natural when this image was taken. The tower of the Square Church can be seen in the centre with the long,…

Various views around the town, the Orphanage is now Crossley Heath Grammar School and the handsome Post Office is now closed.

http://www.penninehorizons.org/Omeka_photos/DPC00497.jpg
Various views around the town, with Wainhouse Tower taking centre stage. Legend has it that it was built so the owner could overlook his neighbour.

http://www.penninehorizons.org/Omeka_photos/DPC00495.jpg
Much of the views in this image are largely unchanged today, although Commercial Street and Bull Green have lost the buildings on the left. These were replaced in the 1930s with a more contemporary architectural style. The view to the station is…
